Mr. Coughlin will be discussing the organization he oversees and Massachusetts’ leadership in the health and biotech industries that is driving innovation, job creation and economic growth. He will also discuss his own career pathway that led to becoming a leader in the industry and take questions from attendees.

Robert K. Coughlin, President & CEO

As President and CEO of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council, Bob's mission is to foster a positive environment that enables each biotechnology company to achieve its full potential in Massachusetts, making the state a world center for biotechnology.  He is very familiar with all areas of the Massachusetts life sciences super cluster and is a passionate advocate for research and the biotechnology community.

Bob has spent his career in both the public and private sectors, most recently serving as Undersecretary of Economic Development within Governor Deval Patrick's administration in 2007.  Prior to that, he was elected as State Representative to the 11th Norfolk district for three terms.  In the legislature both healthcare and economic development were his priorities.

In the world of business he specialized in the environmental services industry and moved on to capital management and venture capital.  He has held senior executive positions in both fields.

He is a graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy where he majored in Marine Engineering, and is a Lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve.

Coughlin has also been active in the community, having served on the boards of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital.  He has served as the honorary chairman of the Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Walk since 1996.  In 2009 he co-chaired the Children's Hospital Boston signature event, Champions for Children's.

The Massachusetts Biotechnology Council (MassBio), a not-for-profit organization that represents and provides services and support for the Massachusetts biotechnology industry, is the nation’s oldest biotechnology trade association. Founded in 1985, MassBio is committed to advancing the development of critical new science, technology and medicines that benefit people worldwide.

BYHP’s Mission:
To connect emerging and passionate healthcare professionals in the greater Boston area to develop strong cross-sector relationships and build knowledge across all healthcare fields.

BYHP’s Vision:
Healthcare needs professionals with diverse cross-sector knowledge, perspectives and relationships to continue to drive improvements.

In order to address this need and continue Massachusetts’ legacy of healthcare innovation, Boston Young Healthcare Professionals (BYHP) will serve as a forum for young professionals across all healthcare fields to connect, collaborate, and share knowledge and experiences. BYHP will accomplish this by providing members and the broader healthcare community with educational forums, professional development and networking events, and targeted civic engagement opportunities.

It is our vision for BYHP to serve as a catalyst and resource for the development of young and emerging healthcare professionals who will work together to ensure informed healthcare improvements and to navigate the immense challenges and opportunities in healthcare.
